Early concept
SJ House is an early concept put together for an acreage of farmland outside of Stonewall, Manitoba. The house prioritized views to the south where a strong tree line provides a living backdrop to large kitchen / living room. The south views also maximize solar gains through the winter when the sun is low in the sky and can reach deep into the house.
By extending the roofline an additional 5 feet beyond the south side of the house we were able to provide shade to the interior during the summer months while blurring the transition between interior and exterior with the continuation of structure beyond the building envelope and floor to ceiling glazing.
The main axis in the home features windows on either end, ensuring the occupant is always moving toward a view of the exterior. The two L-shaped stone walls were to be sourced from the farmland surrounding the site and thought of as way to ground the home, while providing a structural symmetry to the floor plan.
